Hu hails decade after Macau's return as rejuvenation driver
PRESIDENT Hu Jintao said in Macau yesterday that the cause of "one country, two systems" was an important part of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
He stressed that "the great motherland is always a strong back-up force for prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macau."
Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when delivering a speech at the celebration marking the 10th anniversary of Macau's return to the motherland.
The advance of the great cause of "one country, two systems" called for joint efforts of the central government, the governments of the Hong Kong and Macau special administrative regions and the people, he said.
The central government would remain firmly committed to the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and "Macau people governing Macau" with a high degree of autonomy.
The central government would continue to act in strict accordance with the basic laws of the Hong Kong and Macau SARs and give full support to their chief executives and governments, Hu said.
He pledged that all policies adopted by the central government on Hong Kong and Macau would always adhere to the principles of benefiting the long-term prosperity and stability of the areas and improvement in the life of all residents.
Before his speech, the president administered the swearing-in ceremony of the Macau SAR Chief Executive Fernando Chui, principal officials of the SAR government and members of the Executive Council.
The return of Macau to the motherland fulfilled the common aspiration of the people of all ethnic groups of the nation, including Macau compatriots, said Hu.
The event opened a new chapter in the history of Macau and was an important milestone in the development of the Chinese nation, he said.
Hu said the period after Macau's return witnessed the successful practice of "one country, two systems" in Macau, the smooth implementation of the Basic Law of the Macau SAR and the constant progress made by Macau people of all circles in pursuing a development road that conformed to reality.
"Important inspiration can be obtained by reviewing the uncommon process of the past decade since Macau's return to the motherland," Hu said.
It was imperative to have a full and correct understanding and implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle, he said, noting that the key was to realize the most extensive unity under the banner of loving the motherland and loving Macau.
Hu said "one country, two systems" was a complete concept, with "one country" closely linked with "two systems."
