Hu highlights importance of peace, stability

safeguarding the China-US cooperative partnership was not only beneficial to both countries but had a significant influence on world peace, stability and prosperity, Chinese President Hu Jintao told US President Barack Obama when they met on the sidelines of the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit yesterday.

Hu said the two countries should enhance dialogues, exchanges and cooperation and respect each other's core interests.

Hu said China and the US should have positive interaction in the Asia-Pacific region. He said China respected the existence and legitimate interests of the US in the region and welcomed the constructive role of Washington in regional affairs.

The lifting of a US ban on high-tech exports to China would help expand US exports to China, stimulate US economic development and balance China-US trade, he said.

Obama said the US government was starting to address the issue of restrictions on high-tech exports. The US side would also like to see more Chinese investment in the US.

Hu told Obama that problems in the US economy were not caused by China's exchange rate regime and further appreciation of the yuan would not solve them.
