Hu in Macau for anniversary
PRESIDENT Hu Jintao said yesterday in Macau that the central government will remain firmly committed to the principles of "one country, two systems" and "Macau people governing Macau" with a high degree of autonomy.
Hu made the remarks at a dinner in his honor that was hosted by the Macau Special Administrative Region government.
Hu arrived in Macau yesterday to attend celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the city's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third government of the Macau SAR.
"We will give full support to Macau in promoting economic development, people's welfare, democracy and harmony," the president said.
He pointed to the fact that Macau has made greater progress in its development than ever before, as evidenced by continued economic growth, vigorous development in various social programs, sustained social stability, closer links and cooperation with the mainland, more robust external exchanges and ever-expanding international influence.
"What happened speaks loud and clear to the strong vitality of the undertaking of 'one country, two systems'," Hu said.
Outgoing Macau Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah extended a warm welcome to Hu on behalf of Macau.
"I truly believe that under the leadership and support of the central government, Chief Executive Chui Sai On will lead the new administration and the people in Macau to another wave of prosperity and harmony," he said.?
Hu also announced that a pair of giant pandas will be given to the city to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau SAR.
