Hu makes US$3b in deals on Danish trip
CHINA'S President Hu Jintao has penned a string of business deals worth a total of US$3 billion with some of Denmark's largest companies as he pays a three-day state visit to the Nordic country.
The deals were signed yesterday and include agreements with Danish container and shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, brewer Carlsberg, wind turbine maker Vestas and dairy cooperative Arla.
Hu met Danish Queen Margrethe II, toured Copenhagen's harbor aboard the royal yacht, cruising by green technology projects as well as the Little Mermaid statue which was briefly lent out to China for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.
The Danish capital is one of the world's most environmentally friendly cities.
Copenhagen harbor is an example of the city's efforts at environmental protection and green growth.
In July 2002, Copenhagen opened Harbor Bath at Brygge Island to provide residents with a clean environment for swimming, fishing and recreational activities.
Known for green living
Swimming in the harbor was banned in 1954 due to contamination by wastewater and storm water.
However, in the past two decades, the city has invested in treatment plants and sewer systems and improved the water quality immensely.
Copenhagen is well known for its green living, with 36 percent of all residents commuting to work by bicycle. The Danish capital intends to become carbon neutral by 2025, and in 2015 to reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent.
In recent years, many city planners and political leaders from all over the world have visited the Danish capital to study its bicycle traffic, district heating system and its waste management.
Hu arrived in Copenhagen on Thursday, the first by a Chinese head of state since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 62 years ago.
Today, he meets Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt before taking off for the G20 summit in Mexico.
The June 18-19 summit will address pressing issues affecting global economic growth and stability.
US President Barack Obama will meet Hu on the sidelines of the meeting, the White House said yesterday.
