Hu pledges peace in the cosmos

CHINA supports the peaceful exploration and use of airspace, President Hu Jintao told an international audience in Beijing yesterday.

Hu, also chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while meeting the heads of foreign air force delegations who were in Beijing for a military forum on peace and development to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army Air Force.

More than 30 foreign air force delegations attended the forum, which is aimed at promoting exchanges, building mutual trust and discussing ways to maintain outer space and territorial airspace security.

"China will unswervingly uphold a national defense policy that is defensive in nature, and it will never seek military expansion and an arms race and never constitute a military threat to any other country," Hu said.

Hu said China will pursue cooperation with all countries on the basis of peaceful co-existence and facilitate the creation of a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.

Harmony in the air

Airspace has become an important component of friendly exchange around the world and an important aspect in the progress of human civilization, Hu said.

He said in the spirit of peace, development and cooperation, China will continue its commitment to peaceful exploitation and use of space and airspace, remain vigorously involved in international cooperation on airspace security and facilitate the creation of secure and harmonious airspace.

Xu Qiliang, the commander of China's Air Force, made similar remarks yesterday during a keynote speech at the international military forum.

"We propose that a just, effective safety mechanism in (outer) space and airspace must be built to prevent conflicts and wars," he said.

Xu called on the air forces of all countries to enhance cooperation to ensure mutual safety.

They should cooperate to battle terrorism, separatism and extremism, engage in disaster relief and conduct joint military exercises, Xu said.
