Hu seeking reunification and a rejuvenated China

Chinese President Hu Jintao yesterday called for the peaceful reunification of China, which he said best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots.

Hu made the remarks at a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of China's 1911 Revolution, or the Xinhai Revolution.

Efforts are needed to strengthen the political common ground of opposing "Taiwan independence" and upholding the 1992 Consensus, he said.

"We should ... end cross-Strait antagonisms, heal wounds of the past and work together to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he added.

Rejuvenating China, which was the goal of Dr Sun Yat-sen and other pioneers of the Revolution of 1911, should be the common aspiration of all people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Hu said.

The 1911 Revolution, which began on October 10 with an armed uprising, ended 2,000 years of imperial rule by toppling the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and resulted in a republican government, the first in Asia.

Hu quoted Dr Sun Yat-sen as saying: "Unification is the hope of all Chinese people. If unification is achieved, the people will enjoy a happy life; if it is not, the people will suffer."

Hu said: "Achieving reunification by peaceful means best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including our Taiwan compatriots."

Hu called for efforts to promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, share in the benefit of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, increase the economic competitiveness of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, carry forward the fine traditions of the Chinese culture, enhance the sense of a common national identity, and constantly resolve problems on the way ahead.

Hu said the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation must be achieved by adhering to socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Hu said the 100 years since 1911 showed that a correct path and a core force leading the Chinese people forward were key to the rejuvenation of the nation.

"The correct path is the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the core force is the Communist Party of China," he said.

The path of socialism with Chinese characteristics is based on historical lessons and experiences, Hu said, adding: "This path accords with China's realities and the demands of the times, and conforms to the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people and the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation."

Hu also said that "in carrying out the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, we must ensure that development is for the people and by the people and it benefits the people."

Hu also called for efforts to advance economic development, political progress, cultural progress and social development, to improve the ecosystem and carry out Party building, and to constantly improve people's well-being.

Hu said the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation must be achieved by upholding peace, development and cooperation.

"China has been, is and will always be a positive force safeguarding world peace and promoting common development," he said. Hu quoted Dr Sun Yat-sen as saying: "If China becomes powerful and prosperous, we will not only restore our nation's standing, but also take greater responsibility in the world."

Hu said the country would continue to vigorously foster patriotism and strengthen the great unity of all China's ethnic groups and of all Chinese at home and abroad.

"Patriotism is the soul of the Chinese nation and a powerful force mobilizing and uniting the whole nation to strive to revitalize China," said Hu. He said it would be impossible to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation without the concerted efforts of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation.

"We must consolidate and expand the broadest possible patriotic united front, and foster harmonious relations between political parties, between ethnic groups, between religions, between social strata, and between compatriots at home and overseas," he said.

The Chinese nation has a fine tradition of loving the motherland, and it is a common goal to create a happy life for the Chinese people and have China stand firm among the nations of the world, he said.
