Hubei governor refuses to apologize for blowup
THE governor of Hubei Province refused to apologize for threatening a reporter who raised an "improper" question and confiscating her Dictaphone on the sidelines of this year's National People's Congress meeting.
Li Hongzhong, the governor, said yesterday that the incident was only a misunderstanding. He told Xinhua that he welcomes media oversight on Hubei's negative news as long as the report is fair.
He said he took the Dictaphone only because he worried that the questioner was a fake reporter as she hesitated when asked what media she represented, Guangdong-based New Express Daily reported.
But according to former reports and witnesses, the journalist named Liu Jie declared first that she was from the People's Daily and asked him for comments about a hotly reported incident last year when a waitress was charged with murder for fatally stabbing an official who was trying to rape her.
Li lost his composure and said, "Are you really from the People's Daily? And how could you ask such a question as a mouthpiece of our Party? What's your name? I shall talk to your boss."
Li said that he found the reporter cheating, claiming to be from the People's Daily while actually from the Beijing Times.
The Beijing Times is under the jurisdiction of the People's Daily, and its reporters often identify themselves as from the People's Daily to help get interviews.
