Hunan bridge collapses due to poor construction
PART of a bridge being built at a cost of 108 million yuan (US$17.04 million) as a major transport infrastructure in the central city of Loudi collapsed due to improper construction practices.
The surface of the bridge in Hunan Province, around 30 meters wide and 70 meters long, collapsed Monday night. No one was hurt because workers weren't on the job when the incident occurred, Sanxiang City Express reported. The large concrete pieces didn't fall into the river, as they were supported by steel construction pillars.
"I heard a big bang when we were watching TV in our dorms," a worker said. "I walked out of the house to see what happened, but it was too dark to see."
A preliminary investigation showed workers removed some scaffolding without authorization and caused the bridge surface to absorb the overwhelming load.
The economic loss was estimated at 3 million yuan.
The construction of the bridge has been suspended as the probe continues, the report said.
The 426-meter bridge is to link downtown Loudi and the city's development district. Construction started in 2008 and is scheduled to be finished by the end of this year, the newspaper said.
