Hunan high-speed trains halted by metal obstacles
POLICE are investigating two incidents in which metal obstacles were attached to a high-speed rail line in central China’s Hunan Province.
On June 25, a passenger train was damaged after running into a “triangular metal framework,” near the village of Quanzi in Hengyang City, news website thepaper.cn reported.
An official surnamed Tang from Yunji Town in Hengyang was quoted as saying that about 100 police officers are investigating the matter.
The Ministry of Public Security has also been informed, the report said.
The incident happened on a line connecting Wuhan in Hubei Province to Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.
The second incident was reported last Sunday night by villagers who spotted a metal obstacle on a section of track about 2 kilometers from where the first was seen.
The two frames were very similar, leading witnesses to believe they were made by the same person, the website said.
Due to the quick thinking of local people and the vigilance of train drivers, the second obstacle did not result in an accident, it said.
Tang confirmed that several trains had been delayed as a result of obstacles on the track.
A local man surnamed Wei told the website that since June 25, police have been questioning locals and showing them a photograph of the metal frames.
Police also investigated a large hole found in a wire mesh security fence that runs alongside the rail line. The 50 by 30 centimeter hole has since been repaired, the website said.
A publicity officer with the Guangzhou Railway Corp admitted that there had been “minor malfunctions” on the line on both June 25 and Sunday, but he declined to elaborate.
According to a passenger, the G6118 train from Guangzhou to Changsha was delayed by about 90 minutes on Sunday after coming to an abrupt halt near Hengyang, the report said.
Another passenger was quoted as saying that the G1158 from Guangzhou to Wuhan on Sunday lunged to a stop about 9pm. Staff said it was due to a problem with the track.
The delay lasted about two hours before passengers were asked to transfer to another train, the report said.
On June 25, a passenger on the G6116 between Guangzhou and Changsha said her train stopped suddenly about 8pm near East Hengyang Station. People were told the stoppage was caused by a track problem.
A replacement train arrived at 11pm and everyone was transferred to that, the woman said.
She said she also heard staff saying someone had attached a “triangular metal frame” to the track, which had forced the driver to stop the train.
The Wuhan-Guangzhou Railway runs for more than 1,000km through Hubei, Hunan and Guangdong provinces.
