Hunan probes allegation against family planning officials

A joint team of disciplinary officials in Shaoyang and Longhui in central Hunan Province is probing allegations that local family planning officials have taken away babies from families for violating the country's family-planning policy.

The joint investigation came after media reports on the sandal, rednet.cn, a local news portal, reported today.

Family planning officials in Hunan Province have snatched away babies from families who violated the family-planning rules and put them up for adoption, New Century Weekly reported.

These babies were sent to welfare homes which could earn a lot of money from foreign adopters.

By the end of 2005, at least 16 babies had been grabbed away by officials in Gaoping Town in Hunan, according to the magazine.
