Hunan vice mayor gets 15 years for corruption
A city official in central China's Hunan Province was sentenced to 15 years behind the bars for taking bribes worth about 2 million yuan (US$317,800) and embezzling 87,900 yuan of public funds.
Liu Yuncai, former vice mayor of Xiangxiang City, asked for bribes in cash, property and gadgets and falsified work-related expenses to get subsidies, said a court in Xiangtan City, which oversees Xiangxiang.
All his illegal assets have been seized and Liu was fined 150,000 yuan, a local newspaper, Sanxiang City Express, reported today.
The 48-year-old man was in charge of urban construction and utilities supply in Xiangxiang City until he was arrested last June. He demanded kickbacks from construction contractors and real estate developers for helping them win bids, the report said.
The corrupt official also used public money to reimburse personal expenses of himself and his family members, the report said.
