Hundred joins hospital melee over death of patient
NEARLY a hundred people joined in a scuffle in a hospital in Nanchang in east China's Jiangxi Province yesterday morning. The incident was caused by a medical dispute, the local news website, Jxgdw.com, reported today.
A mob of relatives of a dead patient marched to the Nanchang No. 1 Hospital yesterday, armed with iron bars and harpoons. They were fought back by a group of unidentified men hired by the hospital, the report said.
The relatives retreated to the hospital's gate after they were repelled by the hired thugs who continued to chase after them and smashed their vehicles.
These unidentified men all had red bands around their wrists. Some wore helmets and police vests and were holding iron bars as well, the report said.
The melee didn't stop until riot police arrived.
A hospital insider said the violence was triggered by the failed surgery of a patient from the rural area.
The incident is still under investigation, the police said.
