Hundred search stray climber who went home himself

A missing backpacker didn’t inform police when he found his way back, causing nearly 100 people searching a mountain in southwest Sichuan Province in snow for 31 hours.

The man, identified as Zhang Zhongshu, trespassed a restricted area despite warning signs, said a park management official surnamed Dai in Hailuogou, a mountain valley famous for its glacier scenery in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

Hailuogou police received a call from Zhang at 2pm on Tuesday, saying he got lost at the foot of Mount Gongga and estimated his location was near a glacier in Hailuogou, West China Metropolis Daily reported.

“He told us that his mobile phone battery was fully charged,” said Feng Zhongqiu, a local police chief. He dispatched about 40 people, including volunteers, to help him.

But Zhang turned off his phone about 30 minutes later and the search team didn’t give up until 11pm on the same day though the temperature fell below freezing.

On Wednesday morning, more people joined the search. “About 100 people walked 13 kilometers in the 3,600-meter-high mountain and kept trying to contact Zhang,” Dai said.

The backpacker finally answered the phone at 9am, saying he had found a way out about eight hours before and returned to Chengdu, the provincial capital, about 300 kilometers away.

Backpackers venturing into forbidden areas and getting lost often made headlines. Their irresponsible behavior wasted taxpayers’ money because of massive rescue operation that ensued.
