Hundreds arrested in national anti-additive campaign

A total of 989 suspects who were involved in the production and distribution of a banned additive have been arrested since the Ministry of Public Security launched a nationwide crackdown.

Thirty-two underground factories manufacturing clenbuterol, also known as lean meat powder, in Hunan, Sichuan, Hubei and other provinces have been raided by the police. More than 2.5 tons of the banned drugs were confiscated, the Ministry of Public Security said on its website today.

In addition a huge crime ring that produced, sold and used the lean meat powder in 63 cities and regions were shut down, police said.

More than 2,000 police officers were dispatched in the nationwide campaign against the banned additive.

An investigation found the powder was added to pig feed by breeders to promote leaner meat in the central province of Henan in March. The tainted pork products could cause nausea, dizziness, tremors and even lead to cancer.
