Hunt for 25 poisoned workers after hospital discharge

HEALTH officials in a south China city are hunting for 25 sick workers who were discharged from hospital and deprived of medical treatment for hexane poisoning.

The workers, all women aged from 18 to 30 at a company in Guangdong Province's Shenzhen City, were diagnosed with hexane poisoning in Zhongshan, today's Nanfang Daily reported.

Some were suffering weakness and numbness, and four were in a serious condition and could not walk, according to Zhang Jianjie, an official with Shenzhen Occupational Disease Control and Prevention Center.

The illness is apparently a result from their contact with poisonous material at work, according to Zhang Jianjie, but further investigation was needed. They would need up to two years' treatment to recover, he said.

Shenzhen Public Health Authority has launched an investigation into the Shenzhen Dezhenchang Science and Technology Co Ltd after receiving the illness report, its spokesperson Sun Yuwei told Nanfang Daily.

They immediately shut the production line after finding workers were using poisonous oil to clean cellphones without any protection. Medical checkups were arranged for the 33 workers on the line but none showed signs of illness, Sun said.
