Hu's fly gift for Obama
THE Chinese inventor of ultrasonic flycatchers says he has mailed an example of his invention to an international organization, which he hopes will pass it to United States President Barack Obama.
"It is not hygienic for President Obama to swat a fly with his hand. The device can catch the insect alive automatically," said Hu Xilin, a businessman known as "Lord of the Flycatchers" in China.
He said the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had shown an interest in his fly-catching devices and in sending the device to Obama.
The organization said on its blog that it had sent the president a manual bug catcher so future intruders can be captured and released after Obama killed a fly during a TV interview.
Hu's invention, which was patented by the China State Intellectual Property Office in 2007, can trap flies using organic bait and an ultraviolet lamp. It is the size of a desktop printer.
The businessman in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, has sent hundreds of machines for free to help catch flies in disease-plagued regions in Japan, Congo and Vietnam.
