Husband clears his name after 17-year legal battle
A man won a 17-year legal battle yesterday when he was acquitted of murdering his wife.
Ding Yingsheng spent 17 years in prison, always maintaining he had been wrongly convicted of killing his wife.
On December 2, 1996, the Intermediate People’s Court of Bengbu City in east China’s Anhui Province sentenced him to life in prison. Yu appealed, but Anhui’s Higher People’s Court upheld the sentence.
On May 31, 2013, the court reopened the case as they said new evidence had emerged. After deliberating for several weeks, the court ruled yesterday that Ding was not guilty.
The court told Ding that he was in line for a compensation package. Ding said he hoped the police would catch the real murderer soon so that his wife could rest in peace.
