ID cards needed to buy contraceptive pills

TWO cities in southeastern Fujian Province are requiring real-name registration to buy emergency contraceptive pills to prevent the abuse of this drug and some people are worried that their personal information might be leaked.

Food and drug administrators in Fuzhou and Sanming require buyers of morning-after pills to provide their names and ID numbers to prevent the over-the-counter medicine from being used in unsafe and illegal abortion.

Pharmacies are also required to keep a record of quantities sold to each customer, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

Some netizens worried that their personal information might leak out from the pharmacies.

A food and drug administration official in Fuzhou said they will tighten privacy protection, but he also admitted that there is no penalty for such violation, the report said.
