ID theft case nets university teacher
A UNIVERSITY dean has helped an official's daughter get into university with the identity of her former high school classmate.
Tang Kunxiong, dean of Guizhou Normal University's school of history and political science, was found to be an acquaintance of the parents of Wang Jiajun, the imposter, Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.
Tang, from Wang's hometown of Shaodong County in Hunan Province, reportedly picked up an acceptance letter for Luo Caixia, Wang Jiajun's high school classmate, from the university and gave it to his wife to hand to Wang Zhengrong, Wang Jiajun's father.
University faculty members are not allowed to select students for enrollment and are not permitted to handle acceptance letters, according to Ministry of Education rules.
Wang Jiajun enrolled at Guizhou Normal University with Luo's identity in September 2004, when Tang was appointed a dean.
Since the identity theft scandal generated concern nationwide, Guizhou Normal University was questioned as to how it sent an offer of enrollment to Wang Jiajun in the name of someone else.
Tang said Wang Zhengrong, the head of a township government in Shaodong at the time, called his wife, who was a former classmate of the girl's father, in September 2004 saying the university had enrolled his daughter.
Wang Zhengrong asked Tang's wife to pick up the enrollment letter from the university. Tang then picked it up for his wife, who gave it to Wang Zhengrong.
Tang was cited as saying he never sought any profit from Wang's family and didn't know Wang Jiajun was an imposter until learning of the scandal from media reports.
However, many questioned why Tang never noticed the family name of the student on the letter was Luo, not Wang. A source from the Ministry of Education, who declined to be named, said Tang's mishandling of the letter was a discipline violation and the ministry urged the university to collaborate with police.
Guizhou Normal University has revoked Wang Jiajun's bachelor's degree and graduation certificate.
Wang Zhengrong has been detained on suspicion of forging official documents and seals in the case.
