ID theft girl wins claim
THE victim of an identity theft case in which a classmate used her name to get into university was awarded 45,000 yuan (US$6,622) at Changsha Intermediate People's Court yesterday.
Luo Caixia sued Wang Jiajun's family, her former high school in Shaoyang City, the local education authority and Guizhou Normal University for 141,990 yuan. But yesterday she agreed to settle for 45,000 yuan. None of Wang's family members was in court. Her father is in jail, her mother is in a mental hospital, and no one knows Wang's whereabouts.
Luo dropped claims against the other defendants after they convinced Luo they were not at fault in the case.
During the college entrance examination in 2004, Wang Jiajun's father, Wang Zhengrong, a former police officer, used his position to steal Luo's identity and her grades to make sure his daughter went to university. Wang Zhengrong was jailed for two years last year for the scheme. His daughter had graduated and got a job using Luo's identity before the real Luo found out what had happened.
The scheme came to light when Luo tried to open a bank account. She also found she could not get the diploma and teaching certificates she worked so hard for.
