IPR authority cracks biggest pirated DVD operation
CHINESE agencies have cracked the biggest pirated DVD factory in years in southern China's Guangdong Province.
The workshop, under the cover of a plastic product factory, was estimated to make 1.5 million yuan (US$220,000) from its monthly output of 30 million DVDs, the Office of the National Campaign on Anti-Prostitution and Anti-Delinquency told CCTV today.
Last year 57 million copies of pirated publishing products were seized across the nation, 25 percent down from 2008 and 65 percent off from 2007, according to Zhou Huilin, vice dean of the office.
In October the police in Guangdong's Zhongshan City was tipped off that a local factory was suspicious.
Though the factory is licensed to produce plastic products and seemed to be operating normally, no transport of goods was witnessed during the daytime.
To better protect its illegal business, the company installed security cameras at every entrance to the workshop.
Police later caught four people related to the workshop in other Guangdong cities.
An insider identified as Mr X disclosed to CCTV that the workshop had two production lines that could output 30 million DVDs every month. The monthly income was estimated around 1.5 million yuan.
