Ill man dies after ‘made’ to withdraw cash in person

A PARALYSED stroke victim dropped dead at a credit union in south China, after staff insisted he appear in person to withdraw cash.

Deng Moufang, 69, who was left unable to walk or talk after suffering a stroke, was  brought to the rural credit cooperative in Gaozhou City, Guangdong Province in a handcart.

The cooperative required Deng to show up in person to withdraw 30,000 yuan (US$ 4,915) as the name on his account did not match his ID card, a local newspaper reported yesterday.

Deng’s family wanted to withdraw the cash to help pay for his treatment.

But they were refused at the counter because Deng’s account had been registered with his old ID card, in which one character of his name was different from that on his newer card.

Police confirmed Deng’s identity, but the family were again turned down when the credit union learned he wanted to withdraw a large sum.

Deng had to come to get the money, the family was told.

His son said Deng was in a serious condition and attached to an intravenous drip.

It is alleged that a member of staff said he should “pull out the needle and come over.”

On September 27, relatives wheeled Deng to the union and when they got the money, demanded an apology for the remarks about the drip.

As they talked with officials, Deng suddenly died.

An official with the cooperative said Deng’s family had received compensation of more than 30,000 yuan.
