Illegal abortion clinic targets college students
A toilet-turned, unlicensed abortion clinic was shut down in Wuxi, eastern Jiangsu Province after police received tip-offs that clinic advertised on a local university campus to lure students with low fees.
Inside the dim-lit, poorly ventilated clinic, blood stains and dirty toilet paper could be seen everywhere and there was only one operation bed, the local Modern Express reported today.
In an preparation room, a pile of intrauterine devices were soaked in a beverage can and a nurse gown and a pair of surgical gloves were hung on a string, covered with dust, the paper said.
The clinic ads touted that "It is safe and reliable to take off an intrauterine device and have an abortion surgery here." The ads contained a mobile phone number.
"I have been in this profession for more than 20 years. One needs to pay 3,000 yuan (US$474) for an abortion surgery in a big hospital. But in my clinic, it costs only one fifth of that price," a woman surgeon in the illegal clinic said.
The woman fled after law enforcement officials checked the clinic and ordered her to show medical licenses. Officials found a new book on obstetrics and gynecology in the clinic and suspected the woman taught herself abortion skills.
Police are looking for the woman while authorities are investigating the case, the report said.
