Illegal blood dealers on trial in Beijing

FIVE men involved in illegal blood trade in Beijing went on trial yesterday. They were accused of acting as middlemen to sell blood to patients who badly needed blood for a surgery, the Haidian District People's Court said.

The five defendants said they would find flood sellers via the Internet and tell them to pretend to be a friend or relative of the patient and helped them go through all the necessary hospital procedures, the Beijing News reported.

Their leader, identified as Er Ge, is still at large. He would charge 1,500 yuan (US$238) to 2,000 yuan from a patient, give the middleman 30 to 50 yuan and pay the blood seller 350 to 400 yuan, the defendants told the court.

Due to a blood shortage, many relatives chose to donate their own blood to ensure an early operation for the patient or buy blood from illegal dealers who distributed small ads in the hospital to potential customers, the paper said.

"Though it's expensive to buy blood, my mother can have the operation immediately. It is worth the money," a woman said.
