Illegal, dirty snacks sold in Shandong

FAKE, adulterated and moldy snacks made by underground factories were supplied to villages in east China's Shandong Province, endangering the health of local children.

Counterfeit brand snack food was sold in groceries for 1 yuan (15 US cents) or 2 in villages in Weifang, Laiwu and Linyi cities, attracting a large number of children, the Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

In an underground factory in Laiwu, workers were seen shoveling snacks into a huge pot to fry in black oil.

Mud and hairs were seen on the shovel. Several unknown additives were mixed in by workers with their bare hands.

"These food were sold to villages. The wholesale price was 0.2 yuan per pack. They sold very well," the owner of the factory told Xinhua. "Nobody cared how the food was produced."

Faced with the widespread inferior snacks, local quality watchdogs said their hands were tied due to insufficient personnel, high cost of testing and a lack of credentials among inspectors.
