Illegal dog slaughterhouse closed
AN illegal dog slaughterhouse that killed more than 300 dogs every day was shut down in northeastern China's Changchun City after villagers protested.
The slaughterhouse was set up in Sijianfang Village two years ago. It killed two or three trucks of dogs with clubs and clamps every day and every pet dog in the village would not stop howling when the slaughterhouse was working, said a villager surnamed Liu quoted by Xin Wen Hua Bao newspaper today.
Some pregnant dogs gave birth in trucks taking them to slaughter and the puppies were thrown away as garbage, the report said.
The cruel killing not only scared pet dogs, but horrified men, said a villager surnamed Zhang. The butchers clamped the dogs' necks before battering them to death with a thick club.
The dogs were then thrown into a large pot of boiling water where they were skinned, said Zhang.
The meat was sold at 12 to 16 yuan a kilogram to restaurants and markets, the report said.
The slaughterhouse was located right behind a dog farm. The breeder surnamed Han said at least a dozen of his dogs were terrified by the slaughterhouse noises. He said he wrote letters of protest but never received an answer.
Animal health inspectors shut the slaughterhouse yesterday, citing its poor sanitary condition.
