Illegal food additive turned soup red

A Beijing supermarket has been found to be adding colorants to minced meat and later admitted it was against food safety regulations.

A manager surnamed Zhu at the Sanlitun outlet of the city's BHG Market Place admitted last week he had added a colorant called sunset yellow to minced pork, according to Beijing News.

The meat was then sold to several consumers, including one surnamed Hu.

BHG Market Place is a high-end boutique retailer, aimed mainly at expats, and runs several outlets in the city. Hu told Beijing News he bought 10 yuan (US$1.6) of minced meat and cooked soup, but found the meat dyed the tofu and the soup red.

The manager of the supermarket's food department, surnamed Bai, told Hu the additive was added to the meat by staff.

The supermarket later replaced the dyed minced meat and said such acts has not taken place before. Bai said this was the result of a management failure and insufficient training of staff.

According to national food safety standards involving food additives, colorants such as sunset yellow are banned in fresh and cooked meat.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Public Security launched a nationwide crackdown against those who produce food with illegal additives.
