Illegal parcel contained human placenta
A PARCEL containing 750 ampoules of injectable human placenta extract was intercepted after it had been illegally mailed from Japan, Chinese authorities said yesterday.
Officials said it was the single largest parcel of its kind to have been smuggled into China.
The Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in central China’s Henan Province said the parcel was declared as artwork and addressed to a plastic surgery hospital, it said.
Human placenta extract, which some believe has anti-aging properties, poses health hazards for possible contamination with the HIV and hepatitis B viruses, officials said.
Foreign-made biological products can only enter China after a safety evaluation and approval from various official bodies but there is a specific ban on sending human placenta extract through the mail.
The bureau has returned the injections to Japan.
Since last August, at least 650 ampoules illegally mailed from Japan have been seized in southeast China’s Fujian Province.
In October 2013, 200 ampoules, made in Japan and mailed from Hong Kong, were seized in south China’s Shenzhen.
In December 2013, authorities in central China’s Hubei Province seized 50 ampoules illegally mailed from South Korea.
