‘Illegal practices’ behind fatal crash
The State Council has sent a team of investigators to the scene of a bus accident in northwest China's Shaanxi Province that claimed 35 lives.
Team leader Sun Huashan, deputy director of the State Administration of Work Safety, said preliminary findings indicated that illegal practices were behind the year’s worst accident.
The tragedy had exposed poor management on the part of the traffic company, said Sun, who went on to demand a thorough safety examination of all local vehicles.
Highway safety checks and tightening supervision of stop-overs have also been requested to prevent such accidents from happening again.
The bus had 46 people on board when it fell into a ravine some 30 meters deep near a forest park in Chunhua County on Friday afternoon.
Twenty-five people died at the scene while 10 others died in hospital. The rest are being treated for injuries.
Passengers on board were residents from nearby cities, mostly elderly people, who were part of a two-day sight-seeing and shopping tour organized by a Xiangban trading company in Xi'an, the provincial capital.
They were on their way home when the accident happened.
Local police said they were holding four people in custody while their investigation continues.
Yesterday, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said in a statement that the investigation team also included prosecutors sent from Beijing.
The SPP staff joined local prosecutors at county, city and province levels to examine clues that might indicate negligence of duty and other crimes behind the accident.
In its statement, the procuratorate said that its staff vowed to pursue the liabilities of people involved in the case in accordance with the law, especially those whose activities constituted crimes.
