Illegal shrimps seized
THE quality watchdog in Nanjing has confiscated 10 tons of shelled shrimps processed from dead crayfish and destroyed more than 500 kilograms of dead crayfish after receiving a tip-off on the illegal practice, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
The quality watchdog will conduct further tests on the confiscated shrimps, according to the newspaper.
Some residents reported on Friday that a large number of dead crayfish was being processed into shelled shrimps in an illegal workshop on Xinyan Street, sending out a heavy stench. Upon receiving the tip, police and the quality watchdog immediately rushed to the site, the report said.
Police broke into the workshop when nobody answered the door. The quality watchdog found half-processed dead crayfish stuffed into an iron boiler and dozens of bags of shelled shrimps in cold storage. Officials also found bleaching powder, a chemical suspected to be illegally used during the process to make the shrimps look fresher.
"The dead crayfish was regularly conveyed to the workshop and processed, which leaked a terrible smell," said a logistics company employee working nearby.
Initial investigations show the workshop has no license for the shelled shrimp production and officials are hunting its operators.
