Illicit cosmetic injections expand in China
CHINA imported 20,000 doses of Outline & Evolution, a licensed dermal filler from France, last year, yet there were at least 200,000 such cosmetic injections used in the country, a company official said.
Experts said a massive number of side effects from the face-lift injection are expected to occur next year. Most such cases are done in beauty parlors that lack the expertise and legal approval for cosmetic therapy, and most are done without a legal product.
Doctors from Shanghai No. 9 People's Hospital said one third of its outpatient cases were people suffering failed cosmetic treatment due to illegal practice at beauty parlors or improper treatment conducted by some doctors at private hospitals.
To regulate the market, the Shanghai Medical Association's plastic surgery branch will list all local licensed professionals on plastic surgery on the association's website this year for public monitoring, and those practicing illegally will face punishment.
Dr Liu Tianyi, director of Huadong Hospital's plastic surgery department, said beauty seekers must go to licensed doctors and licensed hospitals or clinics for cosmetic injections.
"Hospitals use approved products and strictly choose people whose skin or physical condition are suitable for cosmetic injection," he said. "I have received a patient suffering serious side effects after undergoing cosmetic injection in a beauty parlor. Her skin is extremely thin and can't endure such injection."
Liu said cosmetic injection is popular due to its low risk and quick effects such as skin whitening and wrinkle removal.
"We are seeing a drop of surgeries and a rising demand for cosmetic injection in China," he said.
The high profit also attracts unlicensed practitioners and products from illegal channels, including smuggling and underground manufacturers.
A dose of imported dermal filler like Outline & Evolution costs about 1,600 yuan (US$254) to 2,000 yuan.
In China, only hospitals qualified for plastic treatment may offer cosmetic injections. Only five imported or domestic cosmetic injections are approved by the State Food and Drug Administration, including Outline & Evolution and US Botox.
The China Consumers Commission said about 200,000 Chinese have suffered serious harm from these kinds of cosmetic treatments in the past ten years. Experts said about 70 to 80 percent of these cases were done in beauty parlors.
