Image adds to officials鈥 woes
Bungled digital editing has taken the focus away from a bid by city officials in eastern Anhui Province to improve their image.
The civil affairs bureau in Ningguo published two photographs on the authority’s website on Tuesday of bureau officials visiting a centenarian.
This could be seen as a bid to generate positive headlines, after officials faced criticism for stopping a charity campaign to help poor patients with conditions such as leukemia.
However, site visitors soon noticed that something was not quite right about one picture.
One official’s legs seemed to have disappeared and the senior, crouched at the corner, was half the size of other figures.
Ningguo government said yesterday that the visit was genuine, but admitted the photograph had been manipulated.
A rookie photographer had not got everyone in one picture, so used Photoshop to merge two photographs, officials explained.
Local authorities have criticized officials involved, People’s Daily website reported.
On Tuesday the website reported that Ningguo civil affairs officials told charity activists to end a campaign seeking donations to help three patients.
Officials said the collection was unfair on other patients.
“There are 2,000 people in the city awaiting help. But the appeal was launched for three of them,” said an official.
The civil affairs official suggested that people donate to a local charity instead.
However, many web users argued that it was a person’s right to choose who to help.
