Imported Chanel nail color remover among items destroyed by quality watchdog

A batch of Chanel nail color remover imported by China Duty Free Group that was destroyed because it contains benzene, a cancer-inducing chemical, China's top quality watchdog said today.

The nail color remover was among 189 imported food and cosmetics items returned or destroyed by entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities in March, officials said.

The batch, weighing a total of 2.4 kilograms, was imported from Belgium, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China.

It was destroyed by Zhejiang entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities for containing the poisonous chemical and carcinogen.

The product is available in Shanghai, and a small bottle is priced at 180 yuan (US$29).

Meanwhile, three batches of Betty Crocker cake powder imported from the United States were destroyed for containing excessive aluminium, the bureau said. Two batches of powder used to make spice cake and chocolate cake weighing 3,318 kilograms in total and one batch of its baking powder weighing more than 4,700 kilograms were destroyed in Shanghai. They were imported by a Shanghai food company, according to the bureau.

A total of 360 kilograms of soybean milk products from Taiwan-based Yon Ho were destroyed in Fujian Province for containing genetically modified ingredients in violation of labeling rules. The ingredients are allowed in soybean milk, but the ingredients must be marked on the package, said Gu Zhenhua, deputy director of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.
