Imported milk powder mixed with expired formula in China, report says

ONLINE retailers in China have stopped selling Hero Nutradefense infant formula that was imported from the Netherlands after it was found to have been mixed with expired milk powder in China and the expiry dates were altered, CCTV reported today.

Hero Group's sole authorized China dealer, based in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, was busted by that city's quality watchdog in December for blending expired milk powder and an unknown milk source into Hero Nutradefense products, changing production and expiry dates and repackaging them, CCTV reported today.

The baby formula was marked "100 percent imported dairy source from the Netherlands."

More than 520,000 packages and 38,868 cans of baby formula worth 50 million yuan (US$ 8.05 million) were confiscated by Suzhou police in December. Police are still investigating the case and the company's legal person has been detained.

Hero Nutradefense is still sold nationwide, both online and offline, since Suzhou's quality watchdog didn't order a recall or publicize the quality problems, according to CCTV.

Officials from the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau and police in the city are investigating Swiss-based Hero Group's office in Shanghai, which is responsible for marketing in China.

The Shanghai office insisted the baby formula was 100 percent imported from the Netherlands and said there was no need to worry as an investigation was underway.
