Inaction of passers-by results in man's death
AN 83-year-old man in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, died yesterday after falling on a pavement and lying there for nearly half an hour without anyone coming to his help.
A witness, surnamed Chen, said he saw the white-haired man suddenly tumbled with his face down to the ground near a crossroad at 2:55pm yesterday, the local Southeast Express reported today.
The man, known by his surname Zheng, was immediately surrounded by a crowd of passers-by, who, however, just kept watching him shivering and bleeding on the cold ground, Chen said.
A few minutes later, two long-haired women pushed through the crowd and tried to help him up. One woman searched the man's pockets for medicine, asking if he had a cardiac arrest. But the two women soon drew back when some onlookers warned that they could face trouble if being held responsible the man's fall.
The newspaper said someone told the women their action would be recorded by a road surveillance camera and could get embroiled if they touched the man.
After hesitation, the two stood up and called for ambulance and police.
But Zheng was pronounced dead after medical staff arrived at 3:30pm.
Zheng's daughter took off her clothes to cover her father's body in tears. She said her father was a retired official, but she didn't say whether he had any disease, the newspaper said.
