Incense burner theft sends gang to jail

SIX men have been jailed for between six months and three years after digging up five ancient tombs in a single day in Jiangxi Province.

The court in Xin’gan County sentenced the six, all from Waqiao Village, after they were found guilty of “destroying ancient tombs and larceny.”

The gang leader, surnamed Deng, was jailed for three years, according to the court.

Deng, who is disabled and runs a motor cab, and his five accomplices decided to make money by stealing antiques from tombs in their village in June last year.

With steel chisels and shovels, they raided the tombs with a history of over 200 years, only to find nothing more than a three-leg incense burner which was sold for 60,000 yuan (US$9,660) to an antique dealer. He was arrested for buying a stolen item and is awaiting trial.

Police arrested the gang in August after receiving reports about the damaged tombs.
