Individual donations to Red Cross plunge
Individual donations to the Red Cross Society of China dropped sharply this year while total donation received edged up, the charitable organization said yesterday.
The Red Cross received 4.198 billion yuan (US$660 million) donation this year and spent 2.19 billion yuan on disaster relief and 1.76 billion yuan on humanitarian aid, said Zhao Baige, vice chairman of the Red Cross Society, as he made a financial report at a meeting yesterday.
More than 558 million yuan was donated to the Red Cross by individuals and groups from home and abroad from last October to this September, a dramatic decrease from previous levels. Zhao blamed the sharp fall partly on a spate of scandals, the Beijing Times reported today.
In June, a 20-year-old young woman, Guo Meimei, claimed she was the manager of the Red Cross Commerce and flaunted her lavish lifestyle online, raising public suspicion that the Red Cross misused donations. Though the Red Cross denied any affiliation with Guo's organization, the damage had been done.
However, the total amount of donations made to the Red Cross edged up this year despite the decline in individual donations, Red Cross Society Secretary Zhao Rupeng said.
Auditors have finished a report about the revenues and expenses of Guo Meimei's Red Cross Commerce but Zhao said they haven't decided when and how to publish the report.
