Industrial acid used to treat edible mushrooms

AUTHORITIES in Fujian Province, southeastern China confiscated 35 tons of carcinogenic mushrooms which were processed with industrial chemicals.
Gutian County law enforcement officers raided a shabby factory and seized 630 sacks of tainted mushrooms. They also found 60 barrels of mushrooms soaked in industrial citric acid solution.
The tainted "golden needle"mushrooms were stuffed in sacks for pig feed and emitted sour odor. The factory was closed down immediately, a local newspaper, Strait City Daily, reported today.
An unnamed insider said that adding citric acid could extend the shelf life of mushrooms up to one year. Some people used industrial citric acid instead of edible one to cut costs and food inspectors could not tell the difference.
Medical experts say industrial citric acid is harmful to people's nervous system and can cause allergy and even cancer.
