Industrial pollution suspected in fish kill
OFFICIALS in the eastern Jiangsu Province are investigating the source of pollution that killed tons of fish.
A fish breeder says the cause is industrial pollution, but a government spokesman claimed the culprit is mud.
Hundreds of dead silver carp, grass carp and bream were found floating down the 13,340-square-meter river, which was rented by Zhao Ronggang to breed fish.
The once transparent river is now dark and smelly with some dead fish lying on the river bank, the Yangtze Evening Post reported yesterday.
Zhao blamed factories in a industrial zone at the upper end of the river for releasing toxic sewage into the river.
However, a spokesman surnamed Chen with the township government explained the dark water was caused by mud stirred up from the bottom by a large rain.
He also said the cause of fish kill was complicated but had nothing to do with pollution because they had strict sewage control.
