Infant death toll rises to 12 from hepatitis B shots
MORE reports emerged yesterday of infant deaths linked to hepatitis B vaccination from Gansu, Zhejiang and Hainan provinces, taking the number of casualties to 12 in the country.
A baby in Gansu Province’s capital of Lanzhou died after receiving the vaccination manufactured by the Dalian Hissen Bio-Pharm Inc, a major supplier of free hepatitis B vaccine, the Gansu Provincial Health and Family Planning Committee said.
The infant’s body had been buried, but doctors said they cannot rule out vaccination as the cause of the death.
Health authorities in east China’s Yongjia County, Zhejiang Province, also reported that a two-month-old boy died a day after receiving the Dalian company’s hepatitis B shot on December 20.
A hepatitis B vaccine produced by the Beijing Tiantan Biological Products Co Ltd reportedly led to the death of an infant in Hainan’s Lin’gao County yesterday.
