Inferior cooking oil found in Hefei market

MARKET administrator in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province has found a batch of Arawana-brand cooking oil sold in the local market inferior in quality.

The provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce said the corn oil produced by a factory belonging to Singapore-based Yihai Kerry Foodstuffs was substandard in shade and smoke point 鈥 temperature at which oil produces bluish smoke 鈥 and was irritating to eyes and throat.

The 5-litre bottles manufactured on March 1 and sold in a local grocery had passed quality inspection before entering the market, an Arawana spokesman said in a statement.

It put the blame on the grocery for exposing the bottles in the sun for too long that caused the oil to deteriorate, Xinhua reported today.

But the grocery manager denied improper storage of the oil, arguing that the bottles were put on the shelf as soon as they were delivered.

Dong Jinshi, a National Foodstuff Inspection Center official, refuted the claim of the Arawana spokesman, saying the dark shade and low smoke point may result from poor production, Xinhua reported.
