Informers report traffic violations, earn money

PEOPLE who filmed traffic violations and reported them to police claimed more than 5 million yuan (US$760,165) in rewards last year in Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province.

The number of people providing tips is set to grow this year as Wuhan's traffic management authorities will continue to offer incentives to crack down on traffic offenses, Chutian Golden Daily reported yesterday.

More than 100 residents made it their full-time job to hide at the busiest crossroads, secretly filming traffic violations to win the rewards after traffic authorities launched the program last year.

More than 400,000 traffic violations were reported last year, among which more than 100,000 were confirmed by traffic police and over 5 million yuan in rewards were handed out.

Running red lights accounted for 80 percent of all violations while driving in the wrong direction was the second most frequent offense.

As long as a person records the violation clearly and completely, we will give him the cash award ranging from 10 yuan for minor law-breaking actions to 5,000 yuan for hit-and-run accidents, a traffic officer told the newspaper.

One person made more than 6,000 yuan after filming over 200 vehicles that ran red lights in a single month, the report said.

But the practice can be dangerous. Two men assaulted a person after they learned he was filming traffic violations and reporting to police.
