Inmate beaten to death
A 58-YEAR-OLD prisoner was beaten to death by other inmates the day after he was locked up in a prison in southern China, authorities said yesterday.
The dead man, Luo Jingbo, a farm worker in Danzhou City in Hainan Province, was allegedly beaten by Chen Shizhao and Wu Daxing and others who lived in the same ward at the First Detention House in Danzhou City on March 2, after he refused to obey their orders to take a bath.
During the assault, Luo hit his head against a wall and then collapsed, according to the detention house.
Luo was sent to the Danzhou City No. 1 People's Hospital, but he died on March 4 despite all medical rescue efforts.
Yang Caicong, a policeman on duty at the prison, saw the assault on a monitoring device but did not take immediate measures to stop the attack, authorities said.
Later, the detention house's deputy head, Guo Hanshu, intervened to stop the fight.
Chen Yong, head of the detention house, and Guo have been suspended. Yang was detained last Friday for dereliction of duty.
Luo had been detained for carrying explosives.
The case was still being investigated.
