Inmate cold-shower death sparks inquiry
AN inquiry has opened at a central China reeducation center after three former inmates said they saw a cell mate die when guards forced him to take a cold shower in winter two years ago.
Li Xiaoyong, Wang Debao and another inmate who refused to give his name said they saw guards spray a cold hose over bicycle thief Mu Damin at the Kaifeng City Reeducation Center in Henan Province.
The trio said no one found out how he died because he had no family, news Website Dahe.cn reported yesterday.
Li said he remembered clearly that Mu died on March 14, 2008, when the temperature was very low.
The Kaifeng Bureau of Justice said it had started an inquiry into the case and would not comment before the investigation was over.
Police officers of the reeducation center confirmed an inmate named Mu Damin died there in 2008 but they denied any mistreatment.
Li and Wang said Mu was forced to strip naked in front of all inmates to show how "dirty and stinky" he was.
Guards then ordered two inmates to drag Mu to a tap and sprayed cold water on him, Li and Wang said.
Mu, in his 50s, fell to the ground after the shower and died. Li said Mu did nothing wrong that day but guards constantly bullied him.
Wang said he saw a guard pinch Mu and stick him with a needle after he collapsed, but Mu did not react at all.
His body was sent to a hospital and inmates were told to keep quiet, the trio said.
The three said they stood by their word and would shoulder all consequences as the tragedy happened in front of dozens of inmates.
