Inmate seeks death sentence to escape torture

AN INMATE in a prison in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region allegedly killed his roommate to get death sentence as he was repeatedly tortured and blackmailed in prison by a gang leader.

Li Zhanshuang, a 21-year-old native of Heilongjiang Province, appealed against his capital sentence, saying he killed his roommate because he was frightened of the punishment ordered by the gang leader for not paying him 10,000 yuan (US$1,503) last April.

Li was serving a 14-year sentence in the Zhalantun Prison for a crime of extortion in 2008. Li said he had a fight with an inmate last March, for which the gang leader Saiyinjiya said Li should pay him money to "settle it with prison officials," Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

Li called his mother and other relatives via Saiyinjiya's mobile phone, asking for the money at night.

When Li told Saiyinjiya that his family was already debt-laden and couldn't afford it, Saiyinjiya began ordering other inmates to beat him several times.

Scared of more beating, Li decided to kill Jiang Jiehong, his roommate of just four days, to get himself a death penalty. Li strangled Jiang with a rope and hacked his throat with a pair of scissors.

Li pledged guilty at the court and the Hulunbeier City Intermediate People's Court handed him the death sentence.
