Inmate's death probed

THE family of a prisoner who died in jail in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is seeking answers from officials after receiving his blood-stained body.

Guilin City's Chengjiao District People's Procuratorate Office said it has launched a probe, Gxnews.com reported yesterday.

Wen Youxuan, 32, who was serving time in a Guilin prison, died on Tuesday evening, though he had been very healthy, his brother told the website. What made the family suspicious about the cause of death was the blood filled in his nose, red spots on his body and bruises on his chest, he added.

The family received a call two days earlier from a stranger who demanded 5,000 yuan (US$738), saying Wen was injured in a traffic accident. But the family refused to believe it since Wen was in jail.

Prison officers claimed ignorance about the phone call but said Wen had died suddenly.

They showed the family a videotape of Wen's life in prison, an hour before his death in the jail ward. Around 7:30pm, he suddenly fell to the ground and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
