Inmates who killed guard in jail escape executed

THREE inmates in northern China who killed a security guard to break out of a maximum security prison were executed yesterday.

Dong Jiaji, Qiao Haiqiang and Li Hongbin had been rightly convicted of murder, robbery, kidnapping and theft, the higher court in Hohhot City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region said, rejecting the three's appeal for leniency after they were sentenced to death by a lower court in July.

The three, aged between 21 and 28, escaped with another inmate, Gao Bo, from the Hohhot No. 2 Prison last October.

When police caught up with the four, Gao held a woman hostage at knife point in a final confrontation. He was shot dead by a sniper.

During the break-out, the prison guard who died, Lan Jianguo, was stabbed more than 50 times.

Dong and Qiao confessed that they masterminded the escape. They recruited Li and Gao as muscle.

As part of the plot, the four kidnapped a guard surnamed Xu, robbed him of his key cards, stripped him of his uniform and used it to fool guards at the prison walls.

The escapees put on their street clothes and simply walked out through the gate. Once free, they stole a taxi and robbed a passenger of 700 yuan (US$104).
