Inner Mongolia ex-official jailed for life

A FORMER senior official from north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has been jailed for life for accepting bribes worth more than 10.73 million yuan (US$1.73 million), a Beijing court said yesterday.
Wang Suyi was mayor of Bayannur Prefecture, head of the United Front Work Department and a member of the Standing Committee of the regional Party committee from 2005 to 2013.
During this period, he took advantage of his positions to offer business opportunities or promotions to nine companies and individuals. In return, Wang accepted 10.73 million yuan.
This has been recovered, the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said.
Wang’s wrongdoings were exposed by mistresses and publicized by Gu Hua, an editor at the Henan Daily newspaper.
Party disciplinary investigators began looking into Wang’s dealings in June last year. He was dismissed from the Party and public office last September.
The 53-year-old stood trial on May 29.
Since 2012, many senior officials in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have either been investigated or found guilty of bribery.
In July 2012, Liu Zhuozhi, former vice chairman of the regional government, was jailed for life for taking more than 8.17 million yuan in bribes.
On Tuesday, the region’s Party disciplinary watchdog announced the downfall of three more officials over graft.
It did not say if the trio — the former vice mayor in Hohhot City Bo Lian’gen, the former vice mayor in Hulun Buir City Jin Zhao, and the former deputy secretary general of the regional government Wu Zhizhong — had yet been tried.
Bo was found guilty of dereliction of duty, taking huge bribes and keeping mistresses.
Wu siphoned off state assets, while Jin used official overseas tours as opportunities for luxurious living in exotic places, according to the watchdog.
