Innocent convict seeks more payout
A FARMER who was wrongly jailed for murder plans to sue the government for more compensation for his mental distress during 11 years in jail.
Zhao Zuohai received 650,000 yuan (US$95,185) in compensation from the Higher Court of Henan Province for the gross miscarriage of justice after his alleged victim reappeared alive and well.
He said he regretted agreeing to the amount after he woke up the next day, People's Daily reported today.
Zhao said court officials pulled him out of bed and urged him to sign the compensation contract at 2am last Thursday, the report said.
He plans to ask for another 650,000 yuan at least for the scars in his memory that would never heal.
After Zhao's conviction, his wife remarried, three of his four children were given up for adoption and his house collapsed. Zhao said he wanted to use the compensation to build a new house and to reunite with his children.
He said he definitely deserved more for the 11 years in jail and police torture used to make him confess in 1999.
Police beat him up every day for more than a month, he told the newspaper. They forced him to sit on a standing beer bottle, exploded firecrackers on his head, gave him drugs and threatened to shoot him.
Prosecutors in Henan have detained two police officers for allegedly torturing Zhao. Three officers participated in the torture and one was still at large, Xinhua news agency reported.
Three judges were also put on leave and being investigated over Zhao's case. They sent Zhao to death row with a two-year reprieve; the penalty was later commuted to 29 years in jail.
