Innocent man met real killer in jail

A MAN sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit was released after bumping into the real killer while in prison.

Wu Daquan was convicted by the Zhejiang Higher People's Court in 2007 of robbing and killing a shopkeeper, reported news portal Sina.com yesterday.

An appeal was rejected but his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

The court said Wu directed teenager Shi Biyang to stab Shen Xiuyun to death, in an attempt to rob her in Cixi County in 2006.

Wu denied the accusations, saying he was asleep after drinking alcohol when the murder took place.

He claimed he was awoken up by a call from Shi, who said he has killed a woman with another villager, Ban Chunquan.

Wu and Shi were later imprisoned. The court said Ban was an invention by Wu.

However, Wu bumped into Ban, who was put in prison for a separate offense, in August 2007, and persuaded him to turn himself in.

Wu was retried and cleared of the crime.
